Miles & More Senator Status: Requirements, Benefits and How to Get There

What Senator status is

Senator sits in the middle of the Miles & More ladder, above Frequent Traveller and below HON Circle Member. The important part for most travellers: Senator equals Star Alliance Gold. That status travels with you across every Star Alliance airline, not just the Lufthansa Group. So the lounge access and priority perks follow you whether you are flying SWISS, United or Singapore Airlines.

Senator requirements

Here are the numbers. Nothing else on this page matters until you know these.

• 2,000 Points in one calendar year
• 1,000 of those must be Qualifying Points
• The window is the calendar year, January to December, and it resets every year

That calendar year part trips people up constantly. Your progress does not roll over. On 1 January, you start again from zero.

Points versus Qualifying Points — the part that catches people

Not every Point counts the same, and this is where most people get caught out.

Regular Points come from any Star Alliance flight. Qualifying Points come only from fully integrated Miles & More airlines, such as Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Luxair and Air Dolomiti. ITA Airways now counts too.

The trap is simple. You can hit 2,000 Points and still miss Senator because you are short on Qualifying Points. If you fly a lot of partner metal like United or Turkish, those flights build Points but not Qualifying Points. So you have to watch both numbers, and the Qualifying Points are usually the ones that run out first.

How to actually earn Senator

The fastest path is intercontinental Business Class on the Lufthansa Group. Points are no longer based on distance. They depend on your cabin and on whether the flight is continental or intercontinental. A single intercontinental flight can earn far more than a short continental hop, so long routes in a premium cabin are where you build status quickly.

As a rough worked example, around five intercontinental Business Class round trips get you most of the way to both targets, as long as enough of them are on Miles & More airlines to cover the 1,000 Qualifying Points. Mix in some partner flights and you still earn Points, but keep at least half of your flying on integrated Miles & More carriers, or the Qualifying Points will fall short.

If you mostly fly Economy or short continental routes, the maths gets harder. Those flights earn fewer Points each, so you need many more segments, and you still need to cover the Qualifying Points minimum. It is doable, it just takes a lot more flying.

A few things to keep in mind by cabin:

• First and Business Class earn the most Points per flight, and they are the only flights that also earn HON Circle Points
• Premium Economy sits in the middle, and Lufthansa Group runs seasonal promotions that boost it, so check current offers before you book
• Economy earns the least, so plan for volume if this is your main cabin

How long Senator lasts and how to requalify

Since the 2024 change, status lasts one year, not two. So every January the clock restarts, and every autumn people scramble to close the gap before the cabin crew waves goodbye to their Gold card.

This is the part that catches even experienced flyers. You do not get a two year cushion any more. If you reach Senator this year, you have to do it again next year to keep it. Miss the target and you drop one level, to Frequent Traveller, for the following year.

Miles & More also rewards long term loyalty with Senator Lifetime status, which you keep for good once you qualify. The thresholds for Lifetime change from time to time, so check the official Miles & More site for the current figure before you count on it.

Senator benefits

Senator is one of the most useful statuses in European aviation, and the perks go beyond standard Star Alliance Gold. Here is what you get:

• Lounge access for you and a guest across Star Alliance, including Lufthansa Business and Senator lounges
• Priority check in, boarding, baggage handling and waitlisting
• Extra checked baggage allowance
• Upgrade vouchers at certain Qualifying Point milestones
• Priority on standby and rebooking when things go wrong
• Guaranteed Economy seat on fully booked flights when you book in time
• Companion Award Flight: travel together and save 50% of the miles needed for your companion's ticket

The lounge access alone is what makes most people chase it, especially if you connect through Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich often.

Common mistakes that cost people Senator

• Earning plenty of Points but too few Qualifying Points, usually from flying partner airlines that do not count toward the Qualifying total
• Booking the wrong fare classes, since deeply discounted tickets can earn less than expected
• Leaving the last segments to December, then hitting cancellations or full flights with no room to recover
• Forgetting the calendar year cutoff and assuming progress carries into the new year
• Not tracking Qualifying Points separately, so the shortfall only shows up too late to fix

Every one of these comes down to the same thing. You did not watch the two numbers closely enough through the year.

Ways to top up without extra flying

You do not have to earn every Point in the air. Miles & More lets you collect some status points on the ground.

• CO₂ / SAF compensation packages: add a SAF contribution to any eligible flight and earn up to 80% more status Points and Qualifying Points on that flight, plus up to 20% more HON Circle Points. No extra sectors needed.
• Marriott Bonvoy: link your accounts and earn status points on paid stays, currently 40 points for each two night stay, capped at 120 per year
• Seasonal earning promotions: the Lufthansa Group regularly runs limited offers that boost Points on certain routes or cabins, so it pays to check before you book

These will not get you to Senator on their own, but they can close a small gap at the end of the year.

How to track your Senator progress
